Urban Plunge

 

Heights Presbyterian Church

 

January 22 & 23, 2010

 

Vision:  To allow youth to interact with the some of the marginalized communities in the Houston Heights area to become more sensitive to the needs and concerns of others so that when they return to their home church, they can be a part of a creative process to address the human needs of communities around them.

 

Goals: 

  • To have youth meet people who live in marginalized community and hear their stories.  To have the youth participate in programs that meets the needs of those in marginalized communities.
  • To have the youth meet the leaders of programs that meet the needs and learn their strategies and passions.
  • To have a program to help the youth process the various stories they have heard and put it into perspective
  • To have weekend that is inviting and challenging enough to be attractive to youth.

 

Core Experiences

  • Beacon Light:  A ministry that feeds & clothes the homeless and has a strong call to do so from their Pentecostal Background.  Be inspired by their program and experience their Pentecostal worship.
  • Angel Food:  A ministry of Heights Presbyterian Church.  Not a food hand out, but helping people receive affordable food.
  • Fuente de Esperanza Food Program:  A weekly program that hands out food.  Learn how they get food and hand out food
  • Fuente de Esperanza:  Learn about the ministry in our Presbytery that meets the unique needs of the Hispanic community.  Learn about immigration issues.  Meet Rev. Mauricio Chacon and be inspired.
  • Heights Homeless:  A panel of homeless individuals in the Heights who share their story.  Includes a walking tour of the Heights area pointing out where they receive assistance and where they live.
  • Alcoholics Anonymous:  A popular and successful program for those with addiction issues.  Meet Bob David and Jim Kahan as they share their stories and the AA program
  • Restoration Fellowship:  A ministry and worship of our Presbytery that focuses on the unique issues of individuals in AA.  Experience their worship and meet their members.

6:00  Youth Arrive at Heights Presbyterian and Welcome & Orientation

6:20  Pizza Dinner

7:00  Beacon Light Outreach Worship

8:30  Small Group Discussion on what they expect

9:00  Free time (un-pack)

10:00  Hide & Seek

12:00  Midnight worship in Worship Center

 

Saturday

7:00  Wake Up and Morning Exercise

7:30  Breakfast

7:45  Angel Food Orientation

8:00  Assist with Angel Food Distribution

10:00 Fuente de Esperanza Food Program in Spring Branch

12:30  Lunch at Taqaria Trailer

1:00  Time with Mauricio Chacon

2:00  Small Group time to process the morning experiences

2:30  Meet some of Heights Homeless and tour their world

5:00  Meet with Bob David and learn about AA

5:30  Worship with Restoration

6:30  Small group process time

7:00  Pack up

7:30  Dinner at Vietnam Restaurant.
